Red Oak

Red oak trees are very common in many states. Red oak trees are in neighborhoods and the forests edge of the vernal pool upland.

Acorns are the seed of the red oak. Acorns are bitter, but many animals eat acorns as an important food source. Some animals that eat acorns are squirrels, wild turkeys, birds, and raccoons. In particular, acorns are the preferred fall and winter food of the eastern grey squirrel.

The roots and leaves of the red oak are also food sources for earthworms.
