Earthworm

Earthworms are organisms found in many ecosystems like the vernal pool ecosystem. They are harmless and often good for the soil.

Earthworms are decomposers because they breakdown dead matter. Earthworms move through the soil and eat decomposing leaves and roots of trees like the red oak. Earthworms eat as much as one-third (1/3) of their body weight in a single day.

Earthworms are a very good food source for many predators. They get away from predators by hiding in the soil, but they also get caught. Some predators of earthworms are birds, foxes, skunks, garter snakes, tiger salamanders, and ants.
