Dragonfly Larvae

Dragonfly larvae are big eaters in the vernal pool. The dragonfly larvae are green, so they can hide in the leaves to wait for prey. The dragonfly larvae have large eyes to see prey well. They eat other fairy shrimp and larvae like the tiger salamander larvae and frog tadpoles.

Ducks, frogs, and fish prey on dragonfly larvae. When in danger, the dragonfly larvae dodge or play dead. If caught by a leg, they can get away by allowing the predator to eat their limb. Then the limb grows back.
