Mosquito Larvae

Most people know that mosquitoes suck blood. The adult female mosquitos bite people because they need the blood to produce their eggs. The adult female lays eggs in the water of the vernal pool. Adult male mosquitoes never bite.

After they hatch in the vernal pool, mosquito larvae float on the surface of the water. As they float, the larvae (LAR-vay) eat zooplankton and debris that float by. Mosquito larvae have a few predators. Mosquito larvae are food for small fish, other mosquito larvae, and the tiger salamander larvae.
