Barred owls live in forests, often in the upland of vernal pools. Barred owls make nests in trees. They sit on tree branches during the day.

 

At night, barred owls hunt small animals, especially mice. High in trees, they look all around for prey with their sharp eyes and ears. Barred owls eat many different animals. They eat adult tiger salamanders, raccoons, frogs, squirrels, snakes, and fish.
